The six CEFR levels
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes language ability on six levels, from A1 for beginners to C2 for people who use a language with great precision. Schools, employers and exam boards around the world use it to compare levels.
- A1Beginner
- You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions, introduce yourself and ask simple questions about personal details.
- A2Elementary
- You can talk about your background, your surroundings and routine matters, and handle simple exchanges on familiar topics.
- B1Intermediate
- You can deal with most situations while travelling, describe experiences and plans, and give brief reasons for your opinions.
- B2Upper intermediate
- You can interact with native speakers fairly fluently and spontaneously, and explain a viewpoint on a wide range of topics.
- C1Advanced
- You can express yourself fluently and flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes, and understand demanding, longer texts.
- C2Proficient
- You can understand virtually everything you hear or read and express yourself precisely, even in complex situations.

Frequently asked questions
Is the test really free?
Yes. There’s no sign-up and no email. We save your answers anonymously — with no name, account or IP address — only to make the test more accurate.
How accurate is the result?
The test estimates your level from 18 to 25 adaptive questions across four skills and shows how confident the estimate is. It doesn’t test speaking or writing, so treat your result as a strong guide rather than an official score.
How can I improve my speaking level?
Speak regularly and get feedback on what to fix. In the Lingaira app you can have conversations with an AI tutor at your level and see your scores and tips after each one.
